Jack OUT of the box

Try your best to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, and focus on the customized unique gifts Hashem gave each and every one of us! We'd love to hear your experiences with courage and finding your unique strengths.

For years they whispered behind his back,
They just couln't relate to uncle Jack

Who was constantly miserable inside the box,
He felt so chained- and trapped with locks!

He tried to comply with what he was told,
But he just couldn't squeeze into the mold.

Choices in the box were just up or down,
But Jack just wanted to go to town.

One day he just had enough,
Life in the box was much too tough!!

He wiggled and jiggled and turned his crank,
with all his strength he gave a YANK.

And felt the rip that set him free,
Now uncle Jack was filled with glee,

With boundless energy he bounced all around,
learning from everything that could be found,

He pondered the purpose and meaning of life,
and discovered new ways to prevent world strife,

(He even managed to find a wife-
Her name is Jill, yes that one from the hill),

His creative ideas the doctors resisted,
But Jack found the cures, because he persisted.

He grew as he helped the others he met,
and his work isn't done- not as of yet.

As a child they considered him a zero.
but now they admit that he's a real hero!

We've all met people that seem a bit weird,
Maybe we're snobs or maybe just scared,

Gather your courage, be brave and reach out,
the response you'll get will assuage your doubt.

Beware and don't look at that odd guy with disdain,
For one day he may do surgery on your brain,

So the next time you meet someone who doesn't follow the pack,
Before you pass judgment-

PLEASE,
Remember Uncle Jack.

  1. Chaya Sara, I really love this poem! Where'd you find it?

We can take such a good lesson from it. Sometimes a person thinks that they must stay the way they are forever and there's no way for them to change but everyone can change and get out of their "box" and then they will feel so much better and free!

Thanks for posting this. And welcome back to the blog!! :-)

  3. I just love the message in that poem!! When people are too scared to be themselves (usually for fear of rejection) they risk never discovering their true potential. I wish every teacher in every school would help her students find and appreciate what makes her unique. It's often specifically in those differences that her potential for greatness lies.

  5. Morah Fraidy-I totally agree with you! Every person is unique and by discovering their own hidden talents, they can truly shine. They just have to come out of the box!

  11. I've been grappling with the need to climb out of the box for many years. After reading this poem I've decided that today I'll take my first baby step in that direction. I went out dressed in very simple (but tzniusdig) clothes WITHOUT the matching earrings, hair accessories, makeup and curl ironed hair. I'm talking about clean and neat but not the Brooklyn uniform (currently short pencil skirt, ballet flats with embellishments, large flower stuck somewhere in hair and (often) tight top with a wide stretch belt).
At first I felt a bit nervous about meeting anyone. "what will they think?"...Chas v'shalom they might think I'm nerd or a neb...
Then I thought about the poem and decided I don't want to be a slave to whomever "they" are anyway. They are just as insecure as I am. So, I took a deep breath and forged ahead. With every courageous step I took I felt a sense of freedom.
Imagine, all from being inspired by one little poem.
Thank you Chaya Sara or whoever wrote this poem!!

  17. FINALY!! SOMEONE WHO IS ANNOUNCING TO THE WORLD TO BE DIFFERENT!!!!!!!! I MEAN, AFTERALL, HASHEM CREATED US TO BE OUR OWN UNIQUE SELVES. YOU CAN HAVE 100 PEOPLE IN A ROOM ALL WITH THE SAME BROWN HAIR, BROWN EYES AND SAME HEIGHT, YET EACH OF THEM WILL LOOK SOOOOOO DIFFERENT. HASHEM CREATED EACH OF US TO BE UNIQUE. OBVIOUSLY HASHEM WANTED TO TEACH US HOW VERY SPECIAL INDIVIDUALITY IS. WE ALWAYS TRY TO FORCE OURSELVES INTO A MOLD. BUT THAT IS NOT WHAT HASHEM WANTS. WE ARE NOT MEANT TO BE PUT INTO THE SAME COOKIE CUTTER. KLAL YISROEL IS BEUTIFUL WHEN WE ARE OUR OWN UNIQUE SHAPES AND DESIGNS. HASHEM WANTS US TO BE DIFFERENT FROM EACH OTHER. HASHEM WANTS US TO "JACK OUT OF OUR BOX!!!!!"
THIS ARTICLE IS INCREDIBLE!!!!! THEIR IS SUCH A GOOD LESSON TO BE LEARNT!!!!!!! THANK YOU SO SO SO MUCH FOR WRITING THIS POEM!! IT OUGHT TO BE PRINTED UP FOR E-V-E-R-Y-O-N-E TO BE INSPIRED!!!!!

  19. Why weren't we all born identical? Why did Hashem bother to create us with such a vast array of differences from looks to talents to family circumstances to finances...Ya think he was bored? Does HE really want us to end up identical - or did HE specifically design humans with differences so that we can each improve the world by searching, discovering and using our Kochos? What do you think?

  20. The end of your poem about being judgmental really touched something in me.
I come from a difficult family situation. My father is unable to provide for my large family and my mother is very busy trying to run the house and take care of all of us. My siblings and I try to earn money every spare moment when we are not busy with schoolwork. It is impossible for me to afford the clothes that my classmates wear. I manage with hand-me-downs and clothes from cheap stores. I accept my lot and B"H I excel in school and have several talents. BUT,my clothes don't quite fit in with "look" and I'm often left out of group excursions. Many girls won't even give me a second glance because of the way I dress. I wish so hard that they could look past the externals, stop being so shallow and judgmental and see me for what I really am!

  23. Razzle: sure you can! im so happy it touched you, and thanks for your feed back!!:)
C.G. hmm i highly doubt Hashem was bored by the fact that He put such incredible DETAIL into every part of His creation! (silly ex: Do you know how many different varieties of beetles there are?! perhaps too many! but nonetheless it goes to show that individuality is prretty valued in Hashem's eyes no??)
Anon: Im so sad to hear your going through a hard time, but wow, its clear to me that you are a very self aware person who has cultivated and grown each personality trait. wow wow, kol hakavod, may you hav much hatzlochah! im so happy you were able to relate to my poem, even if other people dont see you for what you want them to, you should know your ten steps ahead just by realizing there is much more o a person than what meets the eye!

and thanks again everyone who commented:)!

    Great poem!
Thank you Elisheva for the reality check!

Calling all parents and teachers - All this talk about kids at risk...maybe a little more acceptance for variations of the human condition would be a nice prophylactic.

By the way, RELAX, I'm not going off the derech nor am I a Pre-at-risk girl just because I like funky shoes in cool colors.
